Parents will now have more confidence they will not be criminalised for smacking their children, according to Prime Minister John Key.

Mr Key took a series of proposals to Cabinet following Friday's resounding referendum victory for opponents of the 2007 child discipline law change. This includes: police procedures will be reviewed, police will report regularly on the trends since the law and  a report of the ministry of social development on the effects of the law change will be brought forward.

Preliminary results found 87.6 per cent of those who voted ticked no to the question: "Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?"
