A retired man has admitted aiming a laser beam at Interisland ferries temporarily blinding crew.

Bernard Westbrook Long, of Te Iro Bay in the Marlborough Sounds, pleaded guilty in Blenheim District Court yesterday to endangering public safety on September 22 and again on October 12. He also admitted careless use of a firearm on October 12, The Marlborough Express reports.

Armed police raided Long's home in the early hours of October 13 last year after crew of the Arahura and Kaitaki ferries reported the laser light just hours earlier on October 12.

The search of Long's house revealed 17 pistols, two military-style semi automatic weapons, four sniper-style rifles and a variety of other rifles and shotguns, Mr Frost said.

Long was remanded on bail until June 24.
