A rotorua teenager who had $43,000 in fines wiped by a judge last November has since racked up $7649 in fines, a court was told this week.
Nigel Caleb Dixon, 19, pleaded guilty in Rotorua District Court to drink-driving, breaching community work and breaching bail conditions.
The court was told that in November Dixon was given 300 hours' community work after a judge wiped $43,000 of traffic fines.
He was jailed a month later for two months after he failed to do the community work. Back in court this week, it was revealed that since the fines were wiped Dixon had clocked up a further 32 fines, totalling $7649.
Twenty-seven were traffic fines while others were for various offences, including stealing from cars, breaching the liquor ban and possession of cannabis.
His lawyer, Dafydd Malcolm, said Dixon had been assaulted while serving community work and was anxious about returning. "To a large part he's put his offending behind him and identified a way forward ... but he's prone to letting obstacles stop him from reaching his goals."
Judge Chris McGuire discharged Dixon without conviction and disqualified him from driving for three months but warned him if he failed to complete his community work by January 27, he could be sent to prison. The judge also ordered him to repay his outstanding fines.
