New Year's Eve revellers can expect a warm and sunny day in most parts of the country, but the good weather will be short-lived.

MetService meteorologist Angus Hines says a band of wet weather is expected to settle over much of the country in next few days.

"A whole swathe is coming into the top of the country and will bring widespread rain through most of the North Island and upper South Island," he said.

The low-pressure system, currently north of the North Island, will move across much of the island late tomorrow night and Saturday.

But before the system even reaches the country, strong to gale northeasterly winds and rain will hit most of northern and central New Zealand -- hitting hardest in Waikato to Bay of Plenty and Northland.

There is a severe weather watch in place for Northland.

On Sunday, a cold front will sweep northwards across the country, with outbreaks of rain or showers spreading over southern and eastern parts of both islands. During Monday, weather should settle with a ridge of high pressure expected over New Zealand.

Today's weather:

Weather is looking good for the last day of the year in most of New Zealand, with only the odd chance of a shower.

Mr Hines said the best spots to see in the New Year are in Marlborough and Nelson, with light winds, lots of sun and warm temperatures.

Queenstown is also looking good, with temperatures expected in the mid- to high-20s for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
