John Key's nail fail, missing a nail with his hammer multiple times while erecting a placard for Mr Osborne, has been viewed more than 1 million times.

John Key's hopeless handyman skills have become an internet phenomenon after his self-confessed "shocker" on the campaign trail.

Mr Key tried to hammer home a message of support for National's Northland byelection candidate Mark Osborne.

Key's nail fail, missing a nail with his hammer multiple times while erecting a placard for Mr Osborne, was reportedly viewed over 1 million times since the weekend on image-sharing site Imgur.com.

"It was a shocker, eh?" Mr Key said this morning.

The Prime Minister brushed off the news the GIF - an animated image - was setting social media alight and inspiring countless cringe-inducing puns on the Reddit website.

"That's great," the Prime Minister said. "All that proves is I'm never any good at woodwork."

Asked if he was a home handyman, Mr Key said no.

"Bronagh [Mr Key's wife] gets a man in. Don't worry about that."
