TVNZ presenter Miriama Kamo's holiday home wouldn't be out of place in a central Asian village.

The 40-year-old Sunday host and partner Mike Dreaver built two yurts - Mongolian tents - on 5.8ha of land in the bush on Waiheke Island.

They sit on a large deck and each houses a queen bed, sofas, bookcases and a dresser.

The couple bought the land in March 2006 for $650,000 and it currently has a valuation of $840,000. The rates this year were $2089.47.

Kamo told the New Zealand Woman's Weekly in 2012: "We wanted to find somewhere that wouldn't involve spending hours in the car but was a different world to Auckland."

She helped build the structures herself and is understood to have developed the site more recently.

"Mike bought me a circular saw, which I stupidly used while on my own out here once to cut decking - I nearly cut my leg off," she told the magazine.

The couple, who have a daughter, live fulltime in their six-bedroom, 1910 Grey Lynn villa which they bought in August 2006 for $750,000. It is now valued at $1.15 million.

Waiheke Island, 35 minutes from Auckland by ferry, has become a hot getaway spot for the rich and famous.

Past and present holiday home-owners include New Zealand's richest man Graeme Hart, former All Black coach Graham Henry, Mad Butcher Peter Leitch, yachtsman Brad Butterworth and former chief executive of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Ralph Norris.
