Motorcyclist dead in collision with truck on State Highway 1 near Taupo

A motorcyclist has been killed tonight in a collision with a truck.

The accident happened on State Highway 1 north-east of Taupo about 7pm.

A police spokeswoman confirmed police had been called to the crash site at Atiamuri, between Tahu and Kemp Rds

Diversions were being set up at the intersections of Tram Rd and SH1 and Tirohanga Rd and SH1.

The road is likely to be closed for some time and police ask motorists to avoid the area.

The crash involved a motorcycle and a truck. The male motorcyclist has died.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

Police are still formally identifying the man and notifying his next of kin.
