"Sunny Wairarapa" lived up to it's name on February 11, for Cliffhanger Promotions' motorcycle sprints on Dalefield Road, Carterton.
The event took in 27 entries, comprising both standing and flying quarter mile runs.
A multitude of bikes were entered, including MV Augusta 1000, Ducati 748R and S4RS, Suzuki GSX250 and GSXR1000, Yamaha R6 and V-Max, Aprilia RSV1000, Honda SP-1.
Tony Sampson again took top honours in the flying quarter mile, clocking 300.50km/h on his 2005 GSXR1000, but was unfortunately unable to beat his previous best of 306.22km/h, recorded in November 2006.
The top standing quarter mile was won by Craig Olliver on his 2001 ZXR12R with a time of 10.44 seconds. Craig also placed second in the flying quarter mile sprint, with a speed of 298.03km/h.
Paul Nuttridge's 1970 Triumph TR6C generated a lot of interest, being in mint condition and beautifully presented. Paul was not quite able to "crack the ton", with a speed of 159.87km/h.
Dean and Maxine Van Ingen travelled all the way from Nelson to compete on their turbocharged GSXR1300 Hayabusa. Unfortunately the bike had some fuelling problems and misfired during the runs, although still managed a respectable 294.99km/h. Dean will try and sort out the tuning of the bike before returning in September to have another go at the title.
All proceeds from the sprints go towards the Cliffhanger Hill climb, held in Gladstone during March of each year. Both the hill climb and sprint meetings are sanctioned by Motorcycling New Zealand.
Cliffhanger Promotions would like to thank all those who assisted with the event, particularly the marshals, sausage sizzlers and sponsors ? TSS Motorcycles, Quasimoto Apparel, Dave Anderson Suzuki, Langlands Honda, Bike Rider Magazine, Darbi Accessories, Forbes and Davies, W. White Wholesale Limited, Nationwide Accessories and Sky City Cinemas. A special thank you also goes to the local residents, whose co-operation is sincerely appreciated.
