What does a loving couple buy to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary?
Matching his and hers 2004, 4.6 litre, V8 Ford Mustangs, of course.
This Saturday will be a triple celebration for George and Hazel Roberts of Whangarei.
The retired couple, who used to own the Whangarei Bus Service, will celebrate their 50th
wedding anniversary, Hazel's birthday and the 40th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, all on the same day.
In a show of their everlasting love the couple bought each other a brand new 40th anniversary, 2004 Mustang -- a convertible for George and a coupe for Hazel.
Mrs Roberts, a self-confessed car enthusiast, has had a life-long interest in Mustangs.
"I have always liked a good car and have always liked the Fords -- we have owned a few in our time."
Cars the couple have previously owned include a 1967 classic convertible Mustang, 1937 Chevy and a 1929 Dodge.
Mr Roberts would not say how much the couple had paid for the matching cars but said anyone else looking to show their love in the same way would not get much change out of $190,000.
The couple's brand new cars, which they have only taken delivery of this week, are matching crimson red with Arizona gold strips.
Both have all-leather interiors and CD players.
"Just thinking about the cars brings a silly grin to my face," Mrs Roberts said.
Ford will not be importing the anniversary cars to New Zealand or Australia -- there were only 4000 made -- and the couple brought their own piece of American muscle into the country privately.
