Maritime New Zealand is making inquiries into the death of a man after a boat capsized at a popular Kaikōura dive spot at the weekend.
Police were called about the capsized boat in South Bay at about 12.40pm on Saturday.
One person was found dead.
Police confirmed at thetime that they were not looking for further victims.
One ambulance attended and police worked at the scene alongside volunteers from Coastguard Kaikōura and members of the public.
A Kaikōura Coastguard spokeswoman told the Herald the boat capsized at Sharks Tooth – a popular boat-access reef dive site off the eastern coast of South Bay.

Today, Maritime New Zealand said in a statement that it was a tragic accident.
“Our thoughts go out to those impacted by it,” the agency said.
