Boat capsizes in Kaikōura, one person found dead

A person has died following a water related incident in Kaikōura on Saturday.

At around 12.40pm, Police were alerted to a boat having capsized in South Bay.

One person was found dead. Police have confirmed they are not looking for further victims.

One ambulance attended and police worked at the scene alongside volunteers from Coastguard Kaikōura and members of the public.

A Kaikōura Coastguard spokeswoman told the Herald the boat capsized at Sharks Tooth - a popular boat-access reef dive site off the eastern coast of South Bay.

Police told the Herald the rescue operation is complete and enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.

A rāhui has been put in place by local iwi for 7 days through until May 9th which includes a 100m radius around Sharks Tooth.
