The day the former MP and Auckland mayor was tostand trial for knowingly filing a false electoral return, veteran protester Castislav "Sam" Bracanov hurled horse manure over him. Bracanov said it had something to do with a fine he received for throwing manure at royalty when Mr Banks was police minister in the 1990s.

The president of the United States was the target of an upset Iraqi journalist, who hurled both shoes at a press conference. The president showed good reactions to duck out of the way.
John Boscowin, lamington, 2009
This wasn't thrown as such, but during a candidates' meeting for the 2009 Mt Albert byelection at Unitec, a student placed a lamington on his head. Mr Boscowin wasn't put off and continued speaking.
Don Brash, mud, 2004
The National leader received a frosty reception at Waitangi shortly after his one law for all speech. "Not a bad shot," said Dr Brash, as he wiped the clod from his face.
