A member of the public intervened, causing the two offenders to "ride off"towards the central city before they were apprehended by police in Rolleston Ave.
Two boys, a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, will appear in Christchurch District Court today charged with assault with intent to injure.
Police would like to thank the member of the public who intervened.
"His actions probably saved the victim from serious injury and his phone call allowed the police to quickly apprehend the youths responsible," police said.
Officers were now seeking to identify the victim, who was described as a man in his mid 20s with short dark hair.
He was wearing a greenish t-shirt, dark pants and a jersey tied around his waist, police said.
