Inspector Simon Walker said he wanted to reassure the local community that it is believed the offender and victim are both known to each other.
He said there is no cause for any ongoing concern.
“Our inquiries are still in the early stages as to what has taken place this afternoon.
“Anyone with information can contact police on 105 using the reference number P064587277.”
Hato Hone St John said one ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and an operations manager were sent to the Edsel St scene about 2.39pm.
“One patient was assessed at the scene and transported to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.”
