Auckland ambulance communications team manager Lauren Smith said the passenger in the truck was trapped when ambulance staff arrived.
Mr Mohammed said the Fire Service used the jaws of life to cut the passenger door off the blue truck to free the passenger.
He was taken into a nearby ambulance with heavily bandaged legs and rushed to hospital.
"He was transported to Middlemore Hospital in a status two - serious condition," said Ms Smith.
Mr Shaheem, a driver for ICT Transport said he wasn't hurt, "just lucky".
"It was really scary."
The driver of the blue truck, who escaped unscathed declined to comment.
Malia Peers, a hospitality management student who lives "just up the road" said she was walking by when the crash occurred.
"It gets so hectic around here.
"It took me a second to notice. I didn't realise something was wrong until I heard him [the passenger of the blue truck] screaming."
After she saw the crash Ms Peers ran home, returning with a thermos of tea for the driver of the blue truck.
"I just felt sorry for him."
