Man accused of stabbing Barry Soper's son considers plea

A man accused of stabbing broadcaster Barry Soper's son has asked for another week to consider his plea.

Jon Gary Edwards, 37, appeared by audio visual link in the Wellington District Court this morning.

He's charged with wounding with intent to injure Henry Soper during an early morning altercation on Saturday, July 29.

The two men didn't know each other.

Edwards has been remanded in custody since the incident.

Henry Soper required surgery after the incident.

Today his lawyer Peter Gilbert told the court Edwards needed one more week to think about how he would plead.

"I've been told that plea will be forthcoming, Your Honour, he just needs that time."

Edwards has been granted his request, and will be held in custody for another week. He's scheduled to appear in court again on September 1 to enter a plea.

Henry Soper, 23, was out with friends on the night of the alleged attack, having recently returned to Wellington from Melbourne.

He's the son of broadcaster and NewstalkZB political editor Barry Soper.

Barry Soper has previously spoken to the Herald about the shock the incident caused, which left Henry in hospital and needing surgery.

He said that the surgeon warned them it would be a long road to recovery.
