Lightning downs powerlines in Wairau Valley, on Auckland's North Shore

Powerlines have come down on to a road in Wairau Valley, Hillcrest, after being struck by lightning.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Wairau Rd this afternoon.

The road has been closed in both directions between Archers Rd and Porana Rd.

Police said the stretch of road would likely be closed until 4.30pm.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible and expect delays.
