The call has gone out for more male role models to join a mentoring programme that has proved “life-changing” for many boys.
With six boys already on its waiting list, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Tairāwhiti Gisborne is seeking more males to provide a positive influence on them through aprogramme that is building a track record of success.
“It can be life-changing for a young person to have a male role model and for a small time commitment each week the benefits are huge for both parties,” BBBS programme coordinator Tiffany Zyp says.
BBBS is a supervised mentoring programme which matches adults (18 and over) with young people (6-12yrs).
Zyp said it was perfect for empty-nesters as well as people who may not have children of their own and wanted to make a positive difference in the life of a young person.
“It is also great for people who may have grandchildren but not get to see them very often, which is quite common in Gisborne because people move out of the region.”
The programme was launched in Gisborne in March 2023 and last year welcomed 10 new tamariki, taking its total number of matches to 15.
“These mentoring relationships are already making a positive impact in their lives, and we’re so proud of what they’ve achieved together,” Zyp said.
Zyp has a “little sister” - Poppy - and says they have developed a close bond.
“Only 35% of our matches are male, meaning many young boys in our community are still waiting for a positive male role model in their lives.”
Being a big brother doesn’t require special skills, Zyp says. It’s about showing up, sharing experiences and being someone a young boy can look up to.
“Whether it’s kicking a ball around, exploring the outdoors, or just having a chat, the time you give can make a lasting impact.”
Last year, BBBS celebrated a milestone for eight of its matches - their one-year “match-iversary”.
“These friendships are a testament to the power of mentoring and the incredible commitment shown by our ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles’.”
Zyp organises special events every couple of months for people in the programme - from surfing to gymnastics.
Last year BBBS rented an Odeon Multiplex theatre for a private screening of Harold and the Purple Crayon, with Gisborne law firm Nolans sponsoring the event.
“The kids thought it was pretty special having their own private cinema,” Zyp said.
“These activities not only build stronger relationships between our Bigs and Littles, but provide novel experiences for them that become peak moments.”
This initiative will see senior students stepping up as mentors to younger tamariki from local primary schools, providing guidance, friendship and positive role modelling.
“This programme is a wonderful opportunity for teens to make a difference in their community while developing their own leadership and empathy skills,” Zyp said.
“For the younger students, having a ‘Big’ who understands their world can be life-changing, offering support and encouragement during these important early years.”
All mentors receive training and professional support from BBBS staff, who are involved throughout, providing ongoing support and accountability to ensure the mentoring match is as safe and strong as it can be.
