Environment Canterbury wants urgent action on the road cartage of toxic substances following the latest chemical spill on the coastal Kaikoura highway.
Four drums filled with ultrarazolu, a corrosive stainless steel cleaner, broke free on a truck trailer on Monday and one of the drums burst, leaking the contents for 10km, from Billy Goat Bay to Churchill St in Kaikoura.
In the past year there have been half a dozen chemical spills on the coastal highway south of Kaikoura, one involving rat poison.
