Landslide in Christchurch caused by broken water pipe

A landslip in Christchurch forced the evacuation of three homes this morning.

The slip on a property on McCormack Bay Rd in Redcliffs was caused by a broken private water pipe connection, Christchurch City Council civil defence and emergency management manager Murray Sinclair said.

"The Christchurch City Council and police have advised the owners of the two properties closest to the slip to stay away from their homes until a full assessment of the land has been conducted," he said.

The owners of the property had been advised to contact their insurers.

"Council and fire service staff will continue to monitor the situation until an assessor determines what needs to be done to prevent further damage."

Sergeant Lindsay Turner of the police southern communications centre said the road had been closed and a detour in place.
