A Kaikoura urban walking track named after Tom Smith, who died after being struck by a whale, was opened on Saturday.
Mr Smith, 38, from Kaikoura, died last June after he was hit by the tail of the humpback whale he was attempting to free from a craypot line off theKaikoura coast. His body has never been found.
A crowd of about 50 people, many of them relatives of Mr Smith, attended the opening ceremony at the bottom of the track on Torquay St.
Mr Smith's widow, Claudine, unveiled a plaque and Kaikoura mayor, Jim Abernethy, cut a ribbon.
Mr Smith would be remembered as a youth mentor, environmentalist, and community-minded family man who was an adventurer at heart, the plaque said.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr Smith's sisters, Angela Smith and Cherri Adams, thanked the community for honouring their brother.
"Tom would have been humbled," Mrs Adams said.
After the official opening, those present were invited to walk the 15-minute trip up to the top of the track at Scarborough St, which has a sign with a picture of Mr Smith.
