A New Zealand reality star says an awkward encounter at a Christmas toy giveaway was “just a misunderstanding” and has been blown out of proportion.
Jaden Laing and his local team spent almost $10,000 at a South Auckland Toyworld, donating toys to children and their parents.
However, during the giveaway, he accused a man attempting to purchase several Hot Wheels cars and a bubble wand of cheating the giveaway, which was intended only for parents who brought their children to the store.
A clip of the encounter went viral, with several viewers saying the man definitely has children.
‘I know this guy, and he was literally getting it for his kids; he didn’t have to shame him like that,’ one person wrote.
“Maybe just a ‘sorry bro, kids have to be present to get a gift’ - he looked really embarrassed and reacted that way,” they continued.
Laing and the man at the centre of the incident Xaris Tofilau later cleared the air during a friendly online call, marvelling about how much of the context was lost after the clip went viral.
The Auckland father told Laing he was overwhelmed by the situation at the moment.
