Inquest into Auckland park police shooting

A coronial inquest into the death of a man shot by police in an Auckland park is about to begin.

David Cerven, a 21-year-old Slovakian man, was shot dead by police in Myers Park in August 2015.

Cerven was being sought in relation to three robberies and police said at the time he claimed to be armed. After 20 minutes of negotiating, he was fatally shot.

Coroner Katharine Greig has said, in a minute, he died as a result of injuries he sustained and no weapon was found at the scene.

She is presiding over the inquest, which starts at 10am on Monday.

Cerven, believed to have been a successful amateur kick-boxer, had been in New Zealand on a working holiday visa.
