Ten artists can be seen creating their art in Manukau Square in Manukau City. The 2002 Sculpture Symposium showcases budding and seasoned local artists sculpting wood, stone and clay, invited by the fine arts department at Te Wananga o Aotearoa. Meet the artists, see them in action
from 1pm to 6pm all this week and until May 24.

Family fitness
A forum on informing people about family fitness clubs will be held tomorrow from 7pm to 9pm at Bruce McLaren Intermediate School. Sport Waitakere and the school are leading the way with health and fitness programmes for families, aimed at widespread concern that children as young as 10 are developing type 2 diabetes, normally seen in middle age. Roading open day
Tell Transit New Zealand which of the three options you prefer for motorway improvements between the Harbour Bridge and Wellington St in central Auckland. Spraying schedule
The painted apple moth spray programme is gearing up again in West Auckland. It is scheduled for next Tuesday, using mostly a small specialist plane plus a helicopter for difficult areas. People with hearing aids might be sensitive to the high-pitched whistling from the helicopter's spray equipment. Think about keeping pets inside. Book fair
The Red Cross says it has now found a big enough venue for its annual Ellerslie Book Fair. The 60,000 second hand books will now be sold in a warehouse at 579 Great South Rd, Penrose, on Friday from 6pm to 9pm and from 8am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday (May 17,18,19). The sale raised about $45,000 for Red Cross projects last year. It has 200 categories of books and magazines priced from 30c. Friday has a $10 entry fee, Saturday and Sunday are free.
Tips for parents
Parenting with Confidence, run by Ian and Mary Grant, is hosting two one-night seminars this week. Tonight is Hot Tips for Growing Boys, held in the St Kentigern College Auditorium, Pakuranga. Tomorrow at the same venue the topic is Hot Tips for Parenting Teenagers. Seminars start at 7.15pm, entry is $15 a person for each seminar.
