A terrified but stubborn woman survived an encounter with an armed man on Saturday, August 30, in Ponsonby.
She and her companion had returned to their car, parked in Ponsonby Rd outside the French Art Shop, at almost midnight. The woman unlocked the car with the remote and got into the driver's seat and her companion got into the front passenger's seat. At the same time, an unknown man got into the back seat of the car, pointed a gun at the couple and said, "This is a holdup."
The man in the front leaped from the car and ran to get police help, and the armed man repeatedly shouted at the woman to drive off. She refused to move and her would-be assailant ran off.
He is described as Maori or Pacific Islander, 18 to 21, stocky, clean shaven, with short black hair. Any information on his identity should be given to Detective Wayne Bailey of Avondale CIB, on (09) 820-5700
