Possum Bourne has been overwhelmed with messages of support since his near fatal weekend smash.
New Zealand's top rally driver is still in intensive care in Dunedin Hospital in a serious but stable condition after a head-on car crash with fellow rally driver Mike Barltrop, 38, near Cardrona on Friday.
Barltrop escapedwith moderate injuries.
A spokesman for the Bourne family and Bourne's Subaru team, Ian Chesterman, said today support for the family had been massive.
"They're providing great support for each other and really being buoyed by the tremendous amount of good will that exists out in the community for Possum," Mr Chesterman told National Radio.
"If you look on the Possum Bourne website... there is well over a thousand well wishers there, there are faxes coming in, there's cards coming in. It really is helping to keep the family strong at this time."
Bourne's great achievement meant he had a huge fan base.
"Anybody who's in motor sport recognises the amazing career that Possum's had over the last 20 years, being at the top of his sport," he said.
"From New Zealand's point of view, he's been over to Australia and won that title seven times, he's won the Pacific title three times. He's certainly had a big impact on the sport.
"He's very much a loved character."
Bourne was known as a friendly competitor and people had felt hugely for the family.
"What you see with Possum, is what you get. He's a very friendly guy, who will stop and talk to anyone," Mr Chesterman said.
The family was meeting doctors again this morning, but it was unlikely there would be much change.
"He remains in that induced coma and I don't think we are to expect dramatic news over the short term and it's just a matter of getting through this difficult time," Chesterman said.
