Police are questioning a 20-year-old man after a Queenstown woman was killed in her home early this morning.
Queenstown Police Inspector Phil Jones said it appeared 49-year-old Patricia Anne Burton had been involved in a struggle with someone thought to have broken into her Kelvin Heights home at about4 am.
A small fire was lit but Mrs Burton's 14-year-old son Paul put it out and called the emergency services from a neighbour's house.
Mrs Burton's husband, Sergeant Trevor Burton, was one of the first police officers to arrive at the scene.
Shortly after 5.30 am, police stopped a 20-year-old man at a road block near Winton, south of Invercargill and took him in for questioning.
They are not looking for anyone else in connection with the case.
