Electricity was cut to several Wairarapa locations as high winds and snow caused trees and branches to bring down powerlines throughout the lower North Island.
Power was cut to parts of Masterton, Longbush, Mauriceville, Mount Bruce and Eketahuna on Sunday from 6.45pm.
Supplier Powerco said by yesterday morning most of the 3500 outages had been fixed, but power remained off for 800 residents including some in Wairarapa.
Network operations manager Phil Marsh said the situation was expected to be resolved by last night.
But he said if the weather worsened his field staff would be called off the job until it was safe for them to be back on the roads.
Forecast
The MetService has forecast that the chilly weather is expected to continue until at least midweek, but possibly until the end of the week.
"Bitterly cold conditions" were forecast, with significant snowfalls for southern and eastern parts of the South Island as well as southern and central parts of the North Island.
However, snowfalls were expected to ease tomorrow and were unlikely to continue down to sea level.
BeachesCastlepoint Holiday Park and Motels manager Kerry Ellis said there was snow overnight at Castlepoint, which continued throughout the day.
"We've got snowflakes coming down but not enough to stay on the ground," he said.
Mr Ellis said the Castlepoint Store was closed yesterday, and it was "very quiet".
"All the hills around us got a good dusting of snow," he said.
Bob Alsap, of Riversdale Beach Store, said there was snow on the beach, and on the ground yesterday morning.
"It's not cold enough to sit on the road," he said, "it's melting pretty quick."
ServicesElsewhere, a raft of other services were affected, including disruptions to the postal and justice systems.
The mail run was cancelled throughout the region yesterday, with Masterton, Featherston, Greytown, Carterton and Martinborough all missing out on letters and parcels.
The NZ Post website said mail deliveries were being attempted in Eketahuna "but might not be able to be completed".
Masterton District Court sittings were also cancelled after the judge was unable to make it to court due to the weather.
Wairarapa Civil Defence emergency manager Paul Walker said people should check on their neighbours, and check their emergency supplies and torches.
He also urged people to make sure they had have replenished their emergency water supply and to have alternative heating and cooking facilities.
