Greytown Football Club had good reason to be singing their own praises on Saturday.
Not only did they have the honour of hosting the two finals in the Wairarapa knockout competition - a mark of the work they have put into developing their grounds and facilities this year - but theplayoff for the premier title was between two of their own teams, Greytown White Swan and Greytown A1 Homes.
And it was Greytown White Swan who called the tune, winning 4-0 despite some spirited opposition from the Greytown A1 Homes line-up.
That game was preceded by the plate final between Featherston United and Masterton Trevs Sports Athletic, won by the latter 4-2 after it was all tied up at 2-2 with just 10 minutes remaining.
The effort of Featherston United to make the final was notable as they returned to local league play only this year after an absence of four seasons. It took four games for them to achieve their first win and after losing their first knockout competition game they played some fine football to make it all the way to the plate final. Featherston United also finished third on the second division league table, another result which exceeded expectations.
For Greytown White Swan winning the Knockout Cup was the perfect ending to a hugely successful season. Earlier they had taken out the Wairarapa association's division one championship and super league titles and are now preparing to participate in the Capital third division series in 2013. On what they have shown this season they should acquit themselves well at the higher level.
Greytown A1 Homes didn't go away empty handed either, having won the President's Cup. And while Greytown Turkey Red - made up of mainly older players content to play on a social basis - didn't obtain any trophies they held their own in the second division.
Hardly surprising then that when it came to the Club of the Year award it was Greytown who took the honours, an excellent achievement for a club which was established under their own banner only in 2010.
