Fraudster's mansion sold

A multimillion-dollar home built by jailed Waikato accountant Garry Soffe has sold for an undisclosed sum.

Hamilton accountant Soffe was last month jailed for five years for his theft of $4.1 million from a family trust.

His home on the outskirts of Hamilton was built with money he stole from clients.

It had a $80,000 sound system, a hydroslide, wine cellar, gym, media room and bar, and was on 1.4 hectares of land.

It was sold by tender by Bayleys Waikato on July 7, the Waikato Times reported.

It is unclear how much the property was sold for, or who bought it -- estimates had valued it at $4 million.

Bayleys Waikato manager and auctioneer Stephen Shale confirmed the sale to the Waikato Times, but was unable to give much detail of the deal.

He was bound to silence under a confidentiality agreement, he said.

Soffe also owned a $1.1m apartment on waterfront Marine Parade at Mt Maunganui, in Tauranga, and a $1.25m Whangamata beach house, on the Coromandel Peninsula.

All three properties have been transferred to law firm McCaw Lewis Chapman, acting for the family trust from which Soffe stole.
