Forest and Bird to lend weight to albatross campaign

Conservation group Forest and Bird marked World Earth Day by announcing it would join Britain's Birdlife International in its campaign to save the world's albatross and petrel species from longline and trawl fishing.

Birdlife International launched its seabird conservation programme in 2000 and Forest and Bird says it will support that campaign by pressing the New Zealand Government to put more restrictions on longline and trawler fishing.

Forest and Bird wants some fisheries where the birds are most active closed and more observers on board fishing boats.
