About 19,000 children's swings sold in New Zealand should be modified, says toy company Mattel.
The Fisher-Price Lift and Lock Swing has a plastic restraint which holds the child in the swing's seat, but children can wriggle out of it and possibly fall from the swing.
"We have acted quickly, perhaps over-cautiously, because we don't want children to be exposed to any risk of injury," said Mattel New Zealand manager Glenn Corbett yesterday.
Mattel knew of two consumer complaints in New Zealand about the swing in the past decade, but is recalling the toy in Australia, where one case involved a nose bleed and cut lips.
Mattel will provide, by mail, a new restraint kit with a waist and crotch belt. A free phone line, 0800 174-063, has been set up.
