Fire visible across Wellington’s harbour

A small fire is burning on a hill above State Highway 2 between Wellington City and the Hutt Valley at Horokiwi, north of the capital.

Fire and Emergency said firefighters responded to the scrub fire about an hour ago, and there was no threat to life or property.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Murray Dunbar said they had received a number of calls about the fire due to its visibility on the hill, but it looked worse than it was.

Firefighters were already at the scene, Dunbar said, with a water tanker due to arrive soon. He expected the 10 metre x 10 metre blaze would be extinguished in “no time”.

The blaze could seen from across the harbour in Eastbourne.

Firefighters have battled fires in Northland, Taupō and Rangitikei in recent days.

Four fire crews were working today to contain a blaze in Tāheke, Northland, after working through the night to bring it under control.

Further south, near Taupō, a fire in Tahorakuri Forest has been contained.

A blaze near Parewānui in the Rangitikei District, which burned a hectare of forestry land was contained about 11pm yesterday.

Work to dampen hot spots continues.

Meanwhile, a fire at Anawhata in the Waitākere ranges is out and firefighters have left the scene.
