An iconic Mount Maunganui surf shop was saved from fire last night after a shed at a the rear of the property went up in flames overnight.
The Mount Surf Shop suffered cracked windows from the heat of the blaze, which engulfed a small repairs shed on site about 8.50pm.
Paid and volunteer Mount Maunganui firefighters responded and prevented the fire from spread further, station officer Paul van Kol said.
''It was going rickety split when we arrived,'' he said.
''Volunteers and paid staff turned up because it was the volunteers' training night.''
The heat from the fire resulted in windows cracking in the main store and the shed itself was ''absolutely destroyed'', Mr van Kol said.
The shed measured about 5x2.5m and was primarily used to help store staff repair surf boards.
Fire investigators would visit the store today to work out the cause of the blaze, Mr van Kol said.
