Fine weekend forecast for Aucklanders

Aucklanders are set to enjoy another fine weekend, despite a frontal system moving up the country, MetService says.

And the weather remains mostly fine elsewhere too, even as the large high pressure system that has kept skies clear this week moves away.

Metservice spokesman Dan Corbett said a weak frontal system would start moving up the country from Friday night, but it "won't have much oomph".

The front will bring a rain band over the west coast of the South Island on Friday afternoon, moving northward to reach central North Island by Sunday night.

Mr Corbett said Auckland was the "pick of the bunch" for the weekend, with fine weather and light breezes.

"The front doesn't really get to Auckland through Saturday and Sunday. The weekend is just more of what we've had."

"Hopefully the sun will come out a little more," he said.

"There will be sunny spells on Saturday and probably less sunny spells on Sunday."

Early next week, a new high will build across the country bringing more dry and settled weather, with some patchy cloud and showers in coastal areas.

The main centres:

Auckland: Long fine spells, light westerly breeze. High of 21.

Hamilton: Possible showers on Sunday night, otherwise fine with light winds. High 21

Wellington: Northerlies picking up from Saturday night and some showers Sunday morning. High 17.

Christchurch: Showers Saturday night and Sunday morning. High of 23 on Saturday, 20 on Sunday.

Dunedin: Chance of showers Saturday night, early Sunday morning. High of 20 on Saturday, 17 on Sunday.
