Fine weather set to return to much of NZ

After heavy rain in the west coast of Southland and strong wind in Wairarapa yesterday, the weather today is looking "pretty settled", MetService says.

There will be a southwest flow over New Zealand and most of the inland places in the South Island will be fine for much of the day.

"Over the North Island there is a bit of cloud and early morning drizzle for parts of North Island but should clear up in the afternoon.

"There are fine spells except for the east of the North Island," MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey said.

However, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne will remain cloudy.

The South Island will be fine for most places except for a few showers in the far south and Fiordland. And the West Coast will develop showers later today.

Auckland and Northland will start the day with a few showers which are expected to clear this morning.

The Bay of Plenty is reasonable fine, but Rotorua can expect afternoon and evening showers, while Hawkes Bay and Gisborne will see cloudy periods for much of the day.

Tomorrow will be fine and dry in the North Island.

"It's looking dry for most areas. There's a bit of cloud in western parts of the North Island but it will be clearing up in the east," Mr Glassey said.

• Whangarei: Early rain clears, then fine spells. High 20C.

• Auckland: Early rain clears, then fine spells. High 19C.

• Hamilton: Becoming fine. Southwest breezes. High 20C.

• Tauranga: Morning cloud, then fine. Afternoon sea breezes. High 18C.

• Wellington: Fine, some morning cloud. Fresh northerly develops. High 15C.

• Christchurch: Fine, northeasterly breezes. High 15C.

• Dunedin: Mainly fine, a few cloudy periods. Westerly breezes. High 16C.
