It comes two days after a double stabbing at nearby Pooks Rd, in which a mother and daughter were discovered dead at a private home.
Detective Inspector Bruce Scott today said there had been no indication the incidents were related.
Officers were investigating a possible gang link in relation to yesterday's shooting incident.
"That's part of what we're looking at to see if they've got associations to gangs, but at the moment we can't say," he said at a media press conference yesterday afternoon.
"We are speaking to people in the vicinity, neighbours and the like, trying to piece together at the moment what's taken place and why," he said.
The dead man was found on Luanda Drive, and was a resident of the street, Mr Scott said.
After the shooting, two people drove the injured man to hospital.
Their blood-stained car was later pulled over by police on Triangle Rd, and has been seized for forensic examination.
The two occupants were currently assisting police with their enquiries, Mr Scott said.
It was believed more than one person fired shots at the scene of the shooting.
He confirmed a firearm had been found at the scene, but refused to disclose any further details about the weapon.
Mr Scott said the nature of the relationship between the two men who were shot was not yet known. He was also unable to comment on whether either of them were known to police.

A man, who declined to be named, said he was at the Waitakere Hospital accident and emergency unit when one of the shooting victims was brought in.
"It was a pretty freaky experience. Lots of shouting and swearing. And heaps of blood. The guy they brought in was face down on the stretcher covered in blood," he said.
Nearby Birdwood School went into lockdown after the shots were heard in the area.
One neighbour described hearing three loud shots from his house on Glen Rd around 11am.
"There were two in quick succession, and then there was a bit of a pause and then the third shot,'' said the man.
"It sounded close.''

Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said he heard screaming from his back garden around 11-11.30am.
"I was sitting on my deck and I heard screaming, and I thought it was coming from behind my house, but then I found out it was Luanda Dr.''
A young man, who lives in the house next door to where the shooting took place, said he heard arguing and yelling from the property last night.
"I heard arguing. I heard people yelling,'' said George, 17.
Arguments had been heard from the house in the past he said, but "not really that bad, until last night''.

Meanwhile, Ishrat Malik, 55, has been charged with the murders of Farhat Rana Malik, aged in her 50s and known as Rana, and her daughter Sidra Noor Malik, believed to be in her teens, over the Pooks Rd stabbings.
He appeared at the Waitakere District Court on Tuesday and has been remanded in custody until next month.

Neighbours said the area was usually quiet, and said they were shocked by the shooting, especially as it came within days of the fatal stabbing of a mother and daughter on nearby Pooks Rd.
Luanda Dr appears to be a quiet street, with tidy timber-clad houses and neatly mowed gardens.
One woman said there were a lot of children in the neighbourhood.
"I'm worried for the kids," she said.
