Fan day to celebrate Tonga's Rugby League World Cup win

Tongan rugby league fans will be able to show their support for their team at a fan day to be held in Auckland on Tuesday.

Rugby League World Cup 2017 organisers tonight announced that a fan day would be held at Sky City to celebrate Tonga's first world cup semi-finals spot after they narrowly beat Lebanon 24-22.

The day will involve players from both semi-finalist teams, with Tonga's opponents to be determined tomorrow in the decider between England and Papua New Guinea in Melbourne.

Australia have already qualified for the first semi-final to be played in Brisbane next Friday against the winner of tonight's other match between the Kiwis and Fiji in Wellington.

Tonga captain Sika Manu said Tuesday's fan day would be a great opportunity for fans to show their support for the team in a busy week which would see them preparing for the semi-final.

"We know that our fans will understand that it is a huge week and with a place in the World Cup final on the line, we're focused on getting the result," Manu said.

Following their game tonight, the Mate Ma'a Tonga team paid tribute to their fans for the incredible support that had helped them progress to next Saturday's semi-final.

"The support had been overwhelming for the players and played a huge part in the success the team has had in the tournament," coach Kristian Woolf.

"Everywhere we have gone, we have been greeted by incredible crowds and they have really reminded all the team who they are playing for."

Police tonight praised the behaviour of the crowd at the Tonga versus Lebanon match at Christchurch Stadium.

Canterbury district metro area commander Superintendent Lane Todd said there were no arrests and only one person was evicted from the stadium because they were drunk.

The tournament was earlier marred by mass brawls involving Tonga and Samoa supporters in South Auckland which ended with mass arrests.
