"Get off. F**k off! Get off," he yelled.
The woman who filmed the incident said some passengers became so frustrated that they got off the bus.
"[Another] passenger who was sitting at the back of the bus had asked him, 'Oh, well, it would have been nice if you had told us. The buses are just coming and going'.
"And the bus driver yelled back at him, 'If you don't want to be on this bus then get off'.
"So the passenger had walked to the front and then it escalated."
The woman who filmed the incident got on the bus in Mt Wellington, told the Herald the incident happened at 6.50am when the bus reached the station in Newmarket.
She said she was shocked at the driver's behaviour.
"His response was surprising and unexpected. It was completely out of line.
"We all looked at each other stunned, thinking 'did this really happen?'
She said "the way he was speaking to the passengers - it was rude" and has laid a complaint over the incident.
A spokeswoman for NZ Bus, who manages Metrolink, said the company became aware of the incident after the footage emerged online today.
"It is unacceptable that one of our drivers swore at a passenger and goes against our company values and customer service goals," she said.
"We have commenced our investigation into the matter and will take appropriate actions with the driver when the investigation is complete. NZ Bus wishes to apologise to the passengers on the bus for any distress from the incident."
