Electoral officials signed up 158 new voters at their stand at the Erotica sexpo in Auckland last month - at a cost of $2362, including staff salaries.
Associate Justice Minister Rick Barker said that at an average cost of almost $15 an enrolment, the exercise was unlikely to berepeated.
"As the exhibition organisers had projected significant numbers of people of 18 years plus would attend the exhibition, it was deemed a worthy opportunity to source enrolments," Mr Barker said yesterday, in a written response to parliamentary questions from National MP Katherine Rich.
But the cost per enrolment "was far in excess of the average for other shows, events and expos".
"Unless improvement can be achieved, the Erotica Exhibition will not form part of future enrolment programmes."
