A woman fought off an attacker who punched and stabbed her in the neck at her home before she managed to flee with her young daughter.
The woman was having surgery at Dunedin Hospital for serious wounds to her neck and face after the attack this morning at her Dunedinhome.
Detective Inspector Kevin Hooper said the man, who was not known to the woman, entered her home about 8.30am when she answered a knock on her front door.
She suffered stab wounds to her neck and face and bruising in the violent attack that followed .
The victim's 3-year-old daughter was also in the house but was unharmed in the incident.
Mr Hooper said police were seeking information about any suspicious activity in the suburb of City Rise between 7am and 9am today.
"It may be that members of the community have noticed someone who matches the general description of the assailant, who was acting unusually or out of character either before or after this time.
"This is a very serious potentially life-threatening incident and police seek the assistance of the Dunedin community and wider public for any information that may assist this investigation,'' he said.
Police also asked people living in the area to search their properties and if they found any items that might not belong to them to report it to the police.
