A Dunedin City Council rubbish collector was shot and received minor injuries at Bayfield Park, Musselburgh, around 10.45pm.
He received a graze to his arm and was treated at the scene by St John Ambulance.
Police suspected the weapon was an air rifle or pistol, and were seeking a white,
four-door Toyota seen in the area around the time of the shooting.
There were two males and a female in the car.
Police earlier visited a Dunedin address as part of their investigation, but were still seeking more information.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn asked for witnesses and anyone with information to contact Dunedin Central Police.
