Dog registration blitz in Lower Hutt

A blitz on dog registration is under way in Lower Hutt in the fight to stamp out dangerous dogs.

Hutt City Council has clamped down on its dog-control procedures following a spate of vicious dog attacks across the country.

A door-knock is under way to find unregistered dogs. Under a month-long amnesty, owners can come forward to register their animals without being fined the usual $200. Registration costs $24.

In the past week, five aggressive dogs - most of them bull terrier cross-breeds - have been destroyed at the owners' request.
