A dog was clubbed to death in Percy's Reserve near the banks of the Ruamahanga River east of Masterton yesterday.
Witnesses told police they saw a man with a baseball bat who appeared to strike something several times.
A dog was heard yelping and the man was seen later digging a hole with a shovel. Police said the incident happened about 1pm.
A man was seen with a dog at Percy's Reserve, he was described to be in his early 30's, medium build, wearing a light blue sunhat, blue jeans and a white collared T-shirt.
It is thought the man drove away in a white hatchback car. Anyone with any further information should contact Constable Raymond Matthews at the Masterton Police Station.
