Beard said the alleged offending against three former Dilworth School students occurred in the early 1990s.
It is part of the police’s ongoing effort to uncover historical sexual abuse at the private boy’s boarding school.
Since the opening of the investigation in 2020, more than 80 victims have been identified, and 13 other men have been charged, including the now-imprisoned Wayne Gillman Moonie.
An inquiry released in 2023 found the board of Dilworth had known about the abuse but did not investigate the complaints or report them to police.
“Today’s arrest is a significant development in the investigation, especially for those men who have waited some time for this matter to be heard in the justice system”, Beard said.
Two other men are facing proceedings in the Auckland District Court for related offending, with a 73-year-old man who was charged late last year expected to reappear in court in April 2027.
The incoming school trust board chairman, Jonathan Mason, offered a formal apology to students, staff, and their families during a private event last year.
“We hope to make clear that the abuse you were forced to endure was not your fault, it was the fault of some people at Dilworth who betrayed your trust and the trust of your mothers, fathers and whānau,” Mason said.
“It failed to put the needs of the boys in their care above the reputation of school.”
