Lansdowne top order batsman Sam Curtis will captain the Wairarapa B senior men's cricket team in their limited-overs match with Horowhenua B on Sunday.
With the wicket at Queen Elizabeth Park oval in Masterton not considered being ready for club or representative play ?a somewhat disappointing scenario- the game will be
played at Rathkeale College.
Curtis is one of at least four players in the Wairarapa side who will be leading contenders for places in the province's A team as the season progresses, the others being another top order batsman in John Peters, all-rounder Lee Ewington and spinner Aaron Wilson.
Keen interest will be taken in the performance of the three Brendon Bracewell Academy XI players, Jaco Oosthuizen, Ben Hundemark and Michael Jamieson.
Oosthuizen is an opening batsman and off spinner, Hundemark a fast bowler and handy lower order bat and Jamieson a wicketkeeper-batsman.
Others in Sunday's line-up are Lansdowne duo Henry Cameron and Willie Thompson, Peter Sigvertsen and Seth Rance from Wairarapa College and Tom Broughton from Rathkeale College.
Speaking of Rathkeale their year 10 cricket team continued their winning streak when they beat St Patricks Silverstream in an inter-school fixture this week by a massive 156 runs.
Batting first Rathkeale reached the huge total of 236-5 off 34 overs. Brock Price backed up earlier scores this season of 40 and 46 not out with a boundary peppered 89. He struck 13 boundaries in all and was well supported by Sam Renall (27),
Hamish Merriman (27) and Matt Dalley (23 not out).
Rathkeale's bowlers made short work of the St Pats batsmen, dismissing them for just 80 runs.Andy Dodd led the way with 5-26 off eight overs with two of his scalps coming from stumpings by wicketkeeper Richard French.
Impressive too were paceman Clifford Cleary who made life extremely difficult for the top order batsmen and all-rounder Renall who took 2-13 from his seven overs.
The Rathkeale year nine team were beaten on the last ball of their game. They made 154, the main contributions coming from Doug Bracewell (33), Chris Girling-McLean (28) and Wade Braddick (20).
Pace bowler Dean Van Deventer and Braddick both claimed three wickets for Rathkeale when St Pats batted and the game looked to be going their way until late in the piece when they failed to sustain the pressure.St Pats was therefore able to make a late recovery and win the game on the last ball.
On the inter-club scene the wet weather meant the first day's play in the opening round of Bidwell Cup senior games last weekend being abandoned without a ball being bowled.
This means that the second day action will be played as a one innings match with outright points going to any team which can force a win. Otherwise the result will be regarded as a draw on the first innings.
Rathkeale College will play the Academy X1 at Rathkeale, Red Star will meet Greytown at Park Sports No.1 and Wairarapa College will be at home to Lansdowne.
