The throaty roar of big block engines echoed throughout Wairarapa over the weekend as more than $5 million worth of iconic American cars hit the region for the 2012 Corvette National Convention.
Heads turned as a motorcade of the performance cars headed through Masterton on Saturday en route to a lunchtime rendezvous in Martinborough.
Convention committee member Russell Wadsworth was rapt with the 87-car turnout for the weekend event, which featured Corvettes built from 1958 to 2011 and valued collectively at more than $5 million.
"We alternate between North Island and South Island for these nationals. Last year we were meant to meet in Christchurch but unfortunately we had to cancel. The earthquakes put paid to that," Mr Wadsworth said.
Proud Corvette owners descended on Masterton in their prized vehicles from as far afield as Arrowtown and Auckland "and all points in between" for this year's event, and were joined by a couple on holiday from Pennsylvania in the US.
