No charges had yet been laid, but RNZ understood detectives were examining the possibility Clark died in an attempted murder-suicide.
John Smart said he worked with Clark for about 30 years at different branches of the veterinary practice. He said Clark had a keen interest in sheep health and production.
“She was a highly respected vet, it’s a hell of a shock.”
Another former colleague, Tony Smith, described Clark as an amazing person who was deeply connected to her local area.
“There are so many people that are grieving,” he said. “She was a very, very loved member of the staff and farming community. It’s just an absolute shock to think that she is actually no longer with us; it’s just mind-boggling really.”
The tight-knit Clutha Vets team would be heartbroken, as would farmers from Taieri to Milton, Smart said.
“I know the whole community down there will be absolutely in mourning for the tragedy of losing Jillian. She was just a great lady, a great community member, and supported the farmers in particular.”
A death notice published on Monday described Clark as a much-loved family member who was tragically taken.
Police said the man was still in a critical condition in hospital on Monday.
In an earlier statement, police said people in Crichton could expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
