There were some very even matches in the men's Walker Fourball on Saturday at Mahunga, with many of the matches going to the 18th before being decided.
Jake Paulsen and Ken Luke again went down the 19th before losing to Robin Britt and Wayne Evans. Defending champions Brian Chappell and Bill
Ousey had an easy win over Mike Alexander and Bruce Herangi, indicating that they will again be a force to be reckoned with as they attempt the treble having won the Walker Fourball for the past 2 years.
Unfortunately no results were posted of the ladies competition and matches, but in one result I am aware of Heather Ousey and Trish Gallon defeated Noleene Stevenson and Rae McKelvey on the 18th.
In the fourball competition of the day which was a fourball par round, first was Fred Brittain & Kevin Gibbs on 12 up, and they were followed by Mark Schultz and Paul Kenny on 11 up, as were Wayne Evans and Robin Britt.
In the club competition which was also a par round, first in group 1 was Ivan Karaitiana on 3 up, followed by Darryl Coley and Wayne Evans who were both square. In group 2 Kevin Gibbs was a clear winner on 7 up followed by Fred Brittain and Jake Paulsen on 4 up.
Holes in two were recorded byJake Paulsen, Lance Duckett, Brian Chappell, Laurence Butler, and Ivan Karaitiana who scored two holes in two and took the birds nest. Bill Ousey took the nearest to the pin on Solway Pie Shop no.1, Lance Duckett Mitre 10 no.3, Bruce Herangi McAuleys Transport no.6, Bryan Dick Solway Butchery no. 8, Terry Fleet Progressive Engineering no.10, and Ian Grant no.17.
Sunday saw the finals of the Bell Family Trophy and the Oswald Trophy. Again the matches went down to the wire, with the result being a repeat of last years final, with Anita Karaitiana & Carl Cocks taking out the Bell Family Trophy on the 18th from Leigh & Chic Reiri.
Rose Alexander & Ken Luke won the Oswald Trophy from Susan & Len Christall. Sunday also saw the long delayed and injury plagued Dove Trophy final contested. David O'Reilly overcame Jeremy harp on the ever popular 18th.
The club competition on Sunday was a medal round, and a Faulknors Service Station Shoot Out round. The scoring was not spectacular with first in group 1 being Kevin May with a nett 71. Next was Bryan Dick with a nett 74, then Chic Reiri and Darryl Coley with nett 75's. In group 2 the scoring was a little superior with Jake Paulsen playing good steady golf taking the group with a nett 66. Mark Schultz was next with a nett 68, followed by Ron Hutcheson on 71 nett, and Mike Foote on 72 nett. Holes in 2 were recorded by Evelyn Munn, Bryan Dick, Leigh Reiri, and Jo Hargood.
This weekend sees the third round of the Walker Fourball and the start of the Roy Morris on Saturday for the men and the draw is below. The ladies have an LGU round, and the Club competition is a medal round and a round of the Faulkners Service Station Shoot Out.
Sunday sees the ladies playing in the Tilson Salver against Masterton at Mahunga, so the course will be closed from 9am until 11am to give the ladies a fair go at the course. The club competition is again a medal and Faulkners Service Station Shoot Out round.
Finally congratulations to Michael Campbell who displayed great course management and composure to take out the 105th US Open on Monday.
The draw for the mens Walker Fourball 3rd round and Roy Morris matches is: No.1 tee: 11.30 I Grant, K Hunter; K May, G Paulsen. 11.37 M O'Reilly, D Jepson; J Harp, D Coley. 11.44 M Schultz, P Kenny; B Chappell, B Ousey. 11.51 L Duckett, D Leach; F Brittain, K Gibbs. 11.58 R Britt, W Evans; T Fleet, R Flood.
