The Serious Crash Unit investigates a head-on crash on Great North Rd, Glen Eden.
A neighbour was awoken by a “loud bang” and another heard screaming from a late-night head-on collision in west Auckland which left one person dead and two with moderate injuries.
The crash in Glen Eden was just after 11pm on Great North Rd, outside Waikumete Cemetery.
A nearbyresident was woken by a loud bang and screeching tyres.
The resident, who did not want to be named, told the Herald she thought a vehicle hit a tree or a pole before she saw two wrecked vehicles.

Many people from the street were watching the aftermath of the accident, including residents from far down the road who heard the crash.
Multiple neighbours told the Herald they heard the bang and screeching noises.
Lella Whippy, who lives near the crash site, said she heard people screaming.
Earlier, Senior Sergeant Michael Wickman told a photographer at the scene there had been a “head-on crash” between two vehicles, with one person seriously injured.
“The Serious Crash Unit has arrived and will carry out normal investigations as per procedure,” Wickman said.

Glen Eden and Henderson fire crews arrived to find two people trapped in one car and a third in the other, Fire and Emergency northern shift manager Ryan Geen said.
They used the jaws of life to free the trio.
Hato Hone St John attended the crash at 11.12pm and took three patients to North Shore Hospital - one in a critical condition and two in moderate condition.
